4. Nanotechnology’s role for a sustainable environment (water, soil, air)

Nanotechnology provides various solutions to the challenges our environment and water resources are facing. Low-energy solutions are needed for potable water generation, including cleaning and water desalination. Environmental monitoring and remediation systems require technologies that can detect, identify and quantify the chemical, biological, and medical agents/toxins in air, water, and soils. Nano sensors may soon be integrated e.g. in mobile telephones that are capable of measuring not just the humidity of the air, but also the CO or sulphur content. In agriculture, nanosensors dispersed in a field can detect the presence of plant viruses and the level of soil nutrients.
In this session, various nanotechnology solutions to more sustainable environment, guaranteeing ample water resources, and detecting toxins in air, water and soil will be discussed.
