European manufacturers have taken up the challenge of designing sustainable production systems that have a minimal unfriendly effect for environment and society. Sustainability combined with innovation is now at the centre of industrial R&D. Environmental challenges such as climate change and resource scarcity are the source of both constraints and opportunities for technological development. Research has to satisfy both environmental and customer needs, generating high added-value products, related processes and technologies to meet functionality requirements as well as growth conditions, occupational safety and environmental protection concerns. Nanomaterials (NM) have a huge potential impact on this and they are opening a new window of possibilities for product designers. Novel functionalities can be introduced at different scales using tailored NM fitting the particular request at product level. The session is aimed at introducing some examples of tailored functionalities facing perspective product performances.
