General director, INL - International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory
Professor in Nanotechnology at the Nanometer Consortium at Lund University (Sweden), and since Sept 1, 2014, he is Director General of the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) located in the city of Braga (close to Oporto), Portugal. INL is just like CERN, an international institution, and it is the only one of its kind having a clear focus on nanotechnology. Lars Montelius is also President Elect of IUVSTA (International Union of Vacuum Science & Technology), and he serves in chair-positions within a number of European Technology Platforms (ETPs) related to nanotechnology. He is also founder & director of several companies working in the nanotechnology area. He has since 2008 been a member of the Swedish Standardization Technical Committee for Nanotechnology (SIS/TK 516), that he chaired since 2010 until his assignment to INL this summer.
His +25 years of work in nanotechnology has centered around scanning probe microscopy, spectroscopy, luminescence, imaging, manipulation of low-D structures, electron, ion beam and nanoimprint lithography processing applied to single electron tunnelling, quantized conductance and various bio and NEMS-devices.
Between 2009 and 2011, he served as director for Øresund University & Øresund Science Region, a cross-border cooperation between eleven universities, three regional authorities, and two countries in the Øresund region, one of Europe’s most innovative regions.
Lars holds an MSc in Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Solid State Physics from Lund University and he was 2013 awarded a honorary doctoral degree from the University of Tartu, Estonia for his long-standing contribution to their build-up of their nanoscience activities.
