Europe and Latin America cooperation for nanotechnology success

The main objective of the European project NMP-DeLA (Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and New Production Technologies Deployment in Latin American Countries, www.nmp-dela.eu)., was to develop a series of activities between European (EU) and Latin American (LA) countries, aiming to strengthen the research, training potential and industrial competitiveness, as a way of facilitating the deployment of nano and advanced materials technologies in areas of major societal challenge in LA: Health, Water and Energy.

Activities covered:

  • Boosting the creation of a Nanocluster between EU and Latin America
  • Networking, education and training in Advance materials
  • Promote synergy with local/regional policy programs and cooperation programs related to advance materials.
  • Building new skills to enhance and strengthening the local knowledge in Latin America about nanomaterial technologies.
  • Exchange of best practices, build capacity in nanomaterial-innovation and technology.

As main result of these activities, NMP-DeLA will provide three “Innovation strategy road maps” and the development of an “Open Innovation Platform”. The participating ministries of Latin America countries in NMP-DeLA, the European Commission, and stakeholders from both regions, could take advantages of this coordinated funding.

Bibliometric study, literature review and stakeholder engagement during workshops, summer schools and interviews reveal many needs in the current higher education, research, development and innovation system in Latin America regarding the deployment of nanotechnologies in society.

Policy makers from EU and LA could strengthen the local capacities for innovation in nanoscience and nanotechnology by agreeing a common long term strategy and by pooling resources for common research and innovation priorities as part of the EU-CELAC policy dialogue.
